If you lost or not sure if you had API key for WordPress or Akismet, following is the way to get one.

    1. Go to http://apikey.wordpress.com/ . If you are logged on you will see it. If not you should log in to your WordPress.com account. WordPress.org guys, you  may not remember but once you got your API key you signed up for a WordPress.com account.
    2. The API key for WordPress.com stats and Akismet is the same. You can ask Akismet to resend it to you at https://akismet.com/resend/ . You can always apply for a new Akismet key if needed.
    3. If you wish to know more about the API key you can read  http://wordpress.com/api-keys/

If you got this far you probably installed the WordPress stats extension and encountered an error.

Lets go over several steps that helped others.

    Get WordPress.com API Key

    • If you are not sure what is your API key check how to get WordPress API key.
    • Make sure you use the right API key. Some users signup more than once to WordPress.com and mixed blog domain, that is assigned to one WordPress.com user, with API key of a second WordPress.com user.

    Error retrieving WordPress Stas

If you got the word error on the extension icon in place of actual stats try the following:

    1. Copy the following URL into a text file. http://stats.wordpress.com/csv.php?api_key=myApikey&blog_uri=http://myDomain.com&days=1&format=xml&table=views
    2. Replace myApikey with your real apikey and myDomain.com with your real domain. For example: http://stats.wordpress.com/csv.php?api_key=e73bf450bebc&blog_uri=http://placeforbloggers.com&days=1&format=xml&table=views
    3. Put the updated URL in your browser. You should see the current number of your blog views, twice, on screen.
    4. If that did not work for you, in your browser right click on the extension icon and select ‘Options’ . Verify, manually, that you filled your domain (including http://) and your API correctly. Sometimes copy and paste add hidden characters.

Every blogger wishes he gets more blog comments. Readers that comment on your blog are more likely to come back and read for more and that means more traffic. Following you can find technique that work for me.

How to get more blog comments on your blog

    1. Remove blog comments CAPTCHA

Make it easy to comment. the only thing makes me not comment, even on posts that are worth commenting on, is blogs with complicated commenting process. Remove the CAPTCHA, never ask for login. Don’t customize too much the blog comments section.

    2. Display newest comments first

Almost every reader go over at least one or two comments of the first comments. Readers won’t comment if they feel their comment will get lost among all other comments. Provide your commenters good exposure and present their comments first. In WordPress go to ‘Discussion’ . Under ‘Other comment settings’ select ‘Newer’ on the line that start with “Comments should be displayed with…”

    3. Respond to as many comments as possible

When I go over comment section in other blogs I usually stop on comments that replied by the author. Readers are more likely to comment when they see that you constantly reply to other readers.

    4. Ask for feedback

Maybe the simplest and obvious way. Just ask for your readers feedback at the end of the post. Try finish posts with a question.

    5. Comment on other blogs

And I am not talking about commenting on problogger or copyblogger. Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you. Comment on blogs with traffic similar to your blog and ask the other blogger comment on your blog. This is a great way to generate initial comments on new  blogs plus you would get immediate feedback.

    6. Use comment plugins & widgets

I already wrote about best WordPress comment plugins and widget and there are similar widgets for blogspot blogs. Plugins make it easier for readers to subscribe to comment feed, send thank you mail when reader comment on your blog and more.

    7. Use CommentLuv plugin

Out of all plugins I most like ComLuv plugin. It is good way for rewarding people who comment on your blog. You can use CommentLuv WordPress plugin or IntenseDebate plugin that is designed for blogspot  blogs. CommentLuv show a link to the last post from the commenters blog. There is no better motivation for readers to comment than getting a link to their blog

    8. Provide your opinion on the topic at the end of the post

Even if the post describes a list of techniques or plugins, add your conclusion at the end. For example if you list recommended plugins state which of them you use in your blog and ask your readers which they use.

    9. Write great content

At the end I noticed that every time I write on unique topic or find interesting point of view on common topics I get more comments. Do the effort to create original and valuable post and your readers will reward you with comments.

    10. Provide a list and ask for addition

Another easy to implement technique is to list a topic and ask your readers to add their own technique.

Well… what is your best technique to increase the number of comments in your blog?

This is a guest post from the author of www.sleeplessblogger.com, a blog where you can find blogging tips from a four figures blogger.

Starting a new blog is like a ritual. The first steps are always the same: buy the domain name, create a twitter account, install WordPress, install the a professional theme, and a few basic plugins. Since the release of WordPress 3.0 the Akismet anti-spam plugin is installed automatically but there are three others that I consider as standard and install on all my blogs. And they are all three for free.

    WP-Twitter Retweet Button

This plugin adds a “Tweet” button to all your posts and pages. This makes easy for your visitors to tweet a link to your post. It also displays the number of visitors who already did tweet a link. This gives a good indication how popular the post is and it is a great way to leverage the power of Twitter. You can find a similar service on www.tweetmeme.com.

    Dashboard Notepad

I hate loosing ideas. This is why I always carry a notepad and a pen in my pocket, and why I use the Dashboard Notepad plugin on all my blogs. This very simple plugin displays a notes window on the WordPress dashboard. I use it to collect post ideas, to-do items and all what goes through my mind. I also use to create draft posts but this plugin is a great productivity tool. Just one trick: you have to click “Save notes” after writing. No autosave feature. May be in the next version?

    WordPress Database Backup

My background is in IT, so I know what a backup is. My hosting company does backup my files, my databases, everything. But there’s never enough backups, particularly if you consider your blog as a business. The WordPress Database Backup plugin provides an easy solution. This plugin sends database backups per mail. I created a special address for my backups and I use the scheduling feature of this plugin to get daily database backups sent there. This is a set-up and forget operation that brings extra safety to my blogs. When you configure it, don’t forget to check all the database tables you want to include in your backups. By default some are not included. This is particularly important after installing Thesis or other plugins that use their own tables.

I’m always looking for more free plugins to make my blogging better, easier and more efficient. Let me know which one are your favorites in comments here or on my home blog,www.sleeplessblogger.com.
